About Us
History

The
Gemini School of Illustration was founded in Berkshire England in 1984 by Roger Barcilon. Roger’s philosophy of treating students like future professionals and sharing his time honored techniques from both the commercial and fine art world gave Gemini students a unique “apprenticeship” education—unlike most traditional art schools at that time. Word of Gemini's successful illustration program quickly attracted students from all over the world and the school thrived for over 15 years in its original location.

Today, an astounding 85% of graduates of the UK program have successful careers as artists in advertising, film, videogame, fine art and publishing.

In 2000, Roger moved to the US where he and one of his former students, Matt Stubbington, joined forces to open
Big Sesh Studios, a commercial digital art firm. In October, 2003, Gemini School of Visual Arts & Communication was reborn in Austin, Texas with the same teaching philosophy and commitment to world class education as its UK counterpart.

We will provide you thorough training in all aspects of illustration, and will assist you during the transition from student to professional into the international markets of commercial art. Our aim is to provide you with a high standard of skill in traditional drawing and painting and a thorough knowledge of all illustration techniques. You will be taught to use a variety of media that will enable you to execute ideas. You will develop your ability to think creatively and learn to communicate visually. You will experience the range of assignments you will get in the world of industry. We will teach you how to run your own studio as a business, and help you build a substantial portfolio, the essential key in entering the world of illustration with the confidence necessary for success.

Our Approach:
At Gemini, you’ll find the learning experience is
much like an apprenticeship. You’ll be treated as a future colleague and expected to show the commitment, dedication and focus required to meet challenges and achieve your highest potential.

Each student progresses through the four year course at their own pace
with the hands on guidance of their primary instructor. From daily sketching exercises to classic drawing and painting, your tutor is there to share techniques and wisdom gained over many years of professional experience.

As you achieve success in the classics, you’ll learn to
apply those skills to a digital medium. Using industry standard software, you’ll develop the ability to think creatively, communicate visually and solve complex visual problems. Our digital media faculty includes artists, photographers, graphic designers, game developers and art directors, all experienced professionals with impressive achievements and a strong commitment to art education.
